Just Patterns Helena Wrap Dress
Work Description
Last year I bought 2.50 meter of this fabric at a fabric market. I must have had a foresight because this amount was just enough for the Helena dress. The fabric was pre-washed and I was left with 1.40 meter instead of the required 1.50. Also the length had shrunk to 2.35 meter. This pattern comes without a pattern layout. That mend puzzling for a perfect and most economical layout. Reading the instructions before sewing is in this case a must. The seam allowances vary from 1 centimeter, 6 mm and French seams. Pockets and side seams are finished with French seams. Waist tie and a part of the front waist band are stitched with 6 mm seam allowances. So when you sew the waistband there’s a change of seam allowances length You also must pay attention but which side is the correct place for the opening. The opening must be on the right side. I used a ladder stitch to stitch front and back waistband together so the opening wouldn’t move while topstitching. Not everyone will chose a wrap dress. There’s always the danger of a gaping top and if the overlap in the skirt is enough. My advice: sew a test version of the bodice with waistband so you can see if the overlap is enough. I made inseam pockets because my dress is in a small size because I was scarred that the large patch pockets would overpower the look of the dress. Final conclusion: I’m very pleased with this dress. Perfect to wear on a hot Summer day.
