Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
"My name is Raven and I've been sewing since I was a teenager. I'm originally from New York City, but I have lived up and down the east coast and currently reside in Jackson, MS.
Here are three fun facts about me: 1. My morning routine consists of drinking coffee and reading Apple news 👵🏼 followed by checking my social media feeds. 2. I’m a native New Yorker but at this point I’ve spent more than half of my life in the South (and I’m not mad about it). 3. I love a good pair of gold hoop earrings -new trends be damned. 👏🏽
What inspired you to start sewing?
"I've always been in tune with my creative side -even as a small child. I come from a very creative family. My aunts knit and my mom is a decorator. I used to love to sketch clothes and try to hand sew my doll's clothes. As I got older, I would DIY anything - from old jeans to old shirts. I think it was a natural progression."
Why is sewing so important to you?
"Sewing is so important for my self confidence, sustainability and overall mental health. I feel like everyone should have a hobby to turn to keep their hands and mind busy. I also love being able to turn something from 2D to 3D straight from my mind's eye. "
Read Her BlogDo you have your own studio? Tell us about your workspace!
"Yes! This was actually a recent upgrade for me! When I moved to Jackson, I had more space to spread out and my studio was created. I love it because it's like a sanctuary. I have three closets! Two for clothes and one for fabric. I have personal photos, letters from friends, family and collaborations posted on one wall. I keep candles nearby too for ambiance. And then of course my machines and cutting table are in the same space as well."
What are your other passions? Or passion projects?
"I love cooking! I love looking up recipes on Pinterest and creating my own too. My favorite time to cook is during the holidays. I feel like all bets are off as far as diets and ingredients."
When you are experiencing a creative block how do you get back into the spirit?
"I have to take a step back for a few days and just reflect on my why. Then I'll channel that energy to a really easy project to get back into the swing of things. "
What does being a Makerist Ambassador mean to you?
"This is an opportunity that I honestly did not see coming, but I'm so glad that it's here. I love that this team allows room for creativity and offers immense support. Thank you for choosing me to be a part of this program!"
