For a long time, I’d fallen out of love with wide leg pants. They just didn’t feature in my wardrobe, and to be honest, I didn’t miss them. That was until someone suggested I create a pair using the Heather Shorts pattern as a base. Intrigued to see how these pants would turn out, I developed this extension pattern, and I am absolutely delighted with the result. These Heather Pants have quickly become my go-to piece for easy stylish dressing.
So, just to be clear, this isn’t a stand-alone pattern. It requires the Heather Shorts pattern, to which this pattern creates an extension to make them into pants. So, if you already have the Heather Shorts pattern, you just need this extension to create pants. If you don’t yet have the Heather Shorts pattern, then remember you will need both patterns to create the pants – and the bonus is you can also make the shorts too!
Fabric wise, I’d opt for similar fabrics as I’d use for the shorts – cotton twill and drill, and linens. The high waist gives a flattering fit that works perfectly with a cropped top (the Blossom Crop Top is ideal!) or knotted blouse, or tuck in t-shirts and shirts for a slightly more polished look. I love working with bold patterned fabrics and patterned pants paired with a plain coloured top is always a winner – just add your favourite sandals.
Some sewing knowledge and experience is ideal when making these pants. However, there are video demonstrations with the Heather Shorts pattern including how to install the zipper, handy if that’s something you haven’t tackled yet but would like to learn.
*** This is a layered pattern and comes with a version suitable for projectors.
