This is the fingering weight version of my original “So Many Cats Hat.” Worked from crown back to the crown, this double thick hat is extra warm and cozy while it hides all those pesky strands of yarn from working the cat chart. Bonus, you can wear the hat with the cat side or the lining side out. It is complete reversible! Pair this design with a soft squishy yarn, and you won’t want to take it off.
Don’t want a double thick hat? No worries…directions are included on how to make it single-layered.
To Fit Size: Child (Adult) Approximate Finished Circumference: 17 ¼ (19 ½)” Finished Length when worn: 7 ½ (8 ½)”
Materials 80 (90)—yards of a fingering/sock weight yarn in Main Color (MC), 160 (180)—yards of a fingering/sock weight yarn in Contrast color (CC) we used Cape May Fiber Co Sock (450yds/100G, 75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon): Colorways: Southern Quahog (MC) and black sea (CC) (add 20 yards or so to, either color, if you are making a pom pom)
US Size 2 (2.75mm) and 3 (3.25mm): 16” circular needle US Size 3 (3.25mm) set of double pointed needles (DPNs) --US Size 4 (3.5mm): 16” circular for COLORWORK 8 (9) stitch markers (7 (8) in one color and 1 in a different color)Designer note about yarns… choose yarns that are able to be blocked and have body. Wools and “toothy” yarns are ideal for fairisle since they fill in any gaps caused by stranded work. Not to mention that wools will be able to bounce back after blocking. Cottons and Acrylics tend to not be ideal for this kind of hat since they lose their life after blocking.
Gauge 26 sts, 40 rounds = 4” in st st in the round on US Size 3 (3.25mm) knitting needle after blocking. 26 sts, 40 rounds = 4” in st st in the round in either Cat Chart colorwork on US Size 4 (3.5mm) knitting needle after blocking. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
