Light and airy, the modern strap dress GARIS immediately puts you in vacation mood. The dress is figure-hugging at the top and has a smocked insert at the back for the perfect fit. The skirt swings loosely around the legs - either in knee-length or calf-length. The front of the dress has a continuous button strip. Whether on the beach or strolling through town, GARIS always looks good. It can be matched with thongs as well as with sneakers or ballerinas, with a cardigan or a denim jacket!
The dress is just perfect for the summer. The front top is lined, so even fine fabrics can be used. Patch pockets and a tie belt complete the dress. Sewn from cooling linen, GARIS will be a true summer dream to wear! But even made of other light woven fabrics, the dress is a beautiful eye-catcher.
GARIS is Indonesian. The word "garis-garis" means striped - considering the many striped summer dresses, the name is really fitting.
Sewing level
The GARIS strap dress is easy to sew for more advanced hobby sewers. You will certainly manage the button placket without any problems thanks to this tutorial. The ruffled smoked back can be a bit of a challenge, so we've rated the difficulty as "medium".
Fabric recommendations & consumption
The most suitable fabrics for this dress are airy woven fabrics which fall not too loosely. Of course, linen, viscose linen, half-linen and other blends are best, but also seersucker, cotton woven, batiste, muslin or light chambray will work. The important thing is that the fabric smocks well - it's best to try it out first!
For GARIS you need the following amount of fabric (based on 140 cm fabric width including seam allowances and buffers):
Calf-length: Size 98/104 - 0.80 m Size 110/116 - 0.90 m Size 122/128 - 1.20 m Size 134/140 - 1.40 m Size 146/152 - 1.50 m Size 158/164 - 1.70 m
Knee-length: Size 98/104 - 0.70 m Size 110/116 - 0.80 m Size 122/128 - 1.00 m Size 134/140 - 1.20 m Size 146/152 - 1.30 m Size 158/164 - 1.40 m
You will also need: - 1 m slightly elastic interfacing strip, 1 cm wide - 0.20 m elastic, 3 mm wide - 8-10 buttons - Color matching yarn - Elastic sewing thread to smock - Optionally some iron-on interfacing to reinforce the button placket, e.g. Vlieseline H180
