This shawl was inspired by the great ruins of ancient Peru. Pictures of the famous sites show how the stone terraces, that remain, surround stunning green grass fields high up in the mountain. Escalara is knitted from the top down, starting with just 3 stitches that quickly form into a triangle shawl. Purl stitches are placed throughout the basic stockinette stitch shawl creating shapes of terrace stones, similar to the ancient ruins. Every row begins with Kfb, K3 and ends with K3, Kfb, which increases the shawl by 2 stitches per row and creates a 3 stitch wide top garter band edging. There are additional increases on both sides of the spine, next to the markers, every 3rd row. If markers are not mentioned, they are simply slipped. All these increases together create a triangular shape with shallow angles. Purl patterns are decorating the top and bottom edge, and a picot bind off finishes the shawl.
